Mad about Mad Men

Image
As you know I fall into the category of people who never watch cable tv. So as a result when we got Netflix and there were a number of series television shows that we could watch from episode 1 and not re-watch an episode. AMC's original series Mad Men is one of them. You all know the story line and you have heard about it being the sexiest show on the air. Well that is what I have read albeit from AMC's web page. But through watching it has done what a great artistic endeavor must do. I knew the writing was very good and the story line was unique in that it is set at a time that doesn't include the most powerful age demographic the 18-35 group of today. It is familiar for me because I would be a bit younger than Baby Gene would be right now and if this pilot had come across my desk and the pitch was right I would have taken the chance also. I say that because of a huge interest that the youth of today have in the culture of the 60's and 70's but it's...

Cable? I Don't need no stinkin cable.

So it has been a month of Netflix! One would think I have enough experience to make a solid comment on the pros and cons of a brilliant idea. Will I keep it? Is cable gone, a thing of the past like my polyester shirts, bell bottoms and the console TV? Weeeel yes and no. I find that Netflix is all that I need for entertainment but that's me and not you. They have enough foreign content to keep me interested and they seem to have a reasonably deep catalog, I found films that I did not expect to see along with the stuff you do expect. A smattering of British comedy with a layer of French romantic comedy topped with morsels of indie productions on a strong dramatic base. English titles are broad in the genres covered along with dozens of TV shows but as I said before it is not big on new releases. Oh well! I am one of those leeches who hardly ever go to movies and only buy dvd's from the discount bin so new releases are not a big deal. Again that is ...

A Netflix update

My TV is nicer than this one Well the experience so far has been a mix of pleasure along with some profound disappointment. I don't have to wait and search There are only 39 titles under the heading Music, I did not include kids video. There needs to be a "B" movie list and a deeper library. By that I mean they could have a lot more older movies yet the classic search provided 7 pages not many were that old and dozens were not there regardless of age.  The classic search alone has taken me to the point where the phone is in my hand and Shaw is on speed dial a cancellation eminent. That said Netflix can still be much better and have a universal appeal with little extra in cost. More on Netflix as we get comfy together.

baited,hooked and Netflixed

So I finally got Netflix! The experience has been good except for my computer being a bit slow for streaming. One complaint that I have is that the library lacks depth. That said I have had it for only two days so the search function hasn't been used.  As I use it more the site will be able to predict titles that I will like. Algorithmicmitic what Whoa!  A mathematical way of saying "We are going to screw with your Netflix experience" ? Why must these engines with the ability to predict have that ability turned on at all times? I suppose they need to track and it doesn't really matter so long as it has a search function and you know what you're looking for. I will see as time goes on if this service is all that,  at the very least they seem to be going in the right direction, I hope it is as good as I think it is.  I want to find little gems in a "direct to DVD/ B movie" section. It would be like going to Zellers or Walmart ...

CABLE NETWORKS SUCK

Image
I am still using the public computer and still hating it. While being without access to the internet I have been prone to watching cable television, lots of it! When you look at the basic cable package and what it offers in a day of programming it is amazing that I find anything to watch, anything that won't bring on psychotic behavior at least. The repeating of the same episode within a 12hr period is one thing but to repeat the same for a week is insane. They all repeat programs they also have followed industry standard and produce shows for a TV season. I'm not sure why the hell I even have cable?  Oh Yeah for those times I have no computer but when it is back on line I will do three things, cancel my cable tv, buy an Xbox or Ps6, the last thing is an important one. I'll sign up to and that takes me to my subject of the week at that is the viability of network/cable TV. The push for a bill on piracy not only in the States with SOPA but also in C...
